Dibba Rock: When to Fish It, and Why Dawn Wins

Ask five east coast regulars where they’d spend one dawn and most will land on the same stretch: the water around Dibba Rock, past Al Aqah on the Fujairah coast. Ninety minutes from Dubai if you leave before the trucks are up, and worth every one of them.

First things first. The rock itself sits in a protected patch, and the buoyed area belongs to the reef, the turtles and the dive boats. Give it space and fish the water either side. That’s no sacrifice, the drop-offs and beach stretches around it are where the action is anyway.

What's swimming there

Bait hangs on this coast nearly year round, and where bait stacks up, queenfish, golden trevally and barracuda are never far. Winter mornings bring kanaad within reach of a kayak, and the sand between the reef holds emperor for anyone soaking a bait. October to May is prime time. In summer you get one honest hour, then the sea goes quiet.

Why dawn wins

• The sea is usually glass before the daytime breeze fills in, so bait showers and working birds show up from the sand.
• The bite rides first light. The half hour before sunrise is the best topwater window on this coast.
• By eight the dive boats arrive, the beach wakes up, and the fish slide deep. You’re not late, you’re done.

How to fish it

From the sand, a 20 to 40 gram spoon cast long and cranked fast covers most mornings. From a kayak, work the outer edge of the drop with a stickbait early, then send a jig down once the sun is up. And check the tide before you drive. A pushing tide through sunrise is the one you want.
